Clean energy investments hit record-setting $243B globally in 2010

10th April, 2011

Worldwide, clean energy investments hit a record-setting $243 billion in 2010, a 30 percent increase over 2009's figures, according to research released by Pew Charitable Trusts. China, Germany and the United States ranked first, second and third in total clean energy investments, respectively.

China solidified its position as the global clean energy powerhouse with a record $54.4 billion in investments in 2010. Meanwhile, the U.S., which had held onto the top spot until 2008, fell to third in 2010 with $34 billion in clean energy investments. Italy shot up from eight to fourth in the rankings with its $13.9 billion in clean energy investments, while India made Pew's top 10 list for its first time.

Wind power led all clean energy sources with $95 billion in global investments. However, solar power experienced significant growth in 2010, with investments soaring to $79 billion, a 53 percent increase compared to 2009. Perhaps surprisingly, investments in biofuels barely even register on Pew's clean energy graph.
